First off, let me say that there are tons of records that I should review before reviewing of 7 Angels 7 Plagues... but I just can't hold it back anymore, I really have to talk about this record! I find myself short for words. OK... where should I start... MY PERSONAL FAVORITE METALCORE RECORD OF THE YEAR 2001. Pheww, I said it. Now that this is out of the way, let's look at the band's history. 7A7P formed in Milwaukee, somewhere in the summer of 1999. They had a different singer back then, so in case you heard their first release (a demo entitled "Until The Day Breathes And The Shadows Flee") you will notice that the vocals are done in a completely different manner. While the demo had a screeching Carcass-like voice, the new singer has a voice that is much more deeper and brutal. I have to admit I like the new singer a whole lot more.
Now, musically, there's no way any reviewer could say "more of the same"... this stuff is so ingenious, so carefully crafted, so intricately designed. I think it's safe to label 7A7P as metalcore because of traditional hardcore elements blending in with screaming guitars on top of insane bass drum techniques... but they really pull it off well! If you really need a comparison, think early-to-mid Zao, Anah Aevia and the newest Overcome (especially for the vocals!). That kind of passionate, melodic metalcore that lays everyone to waste after listening.
I really hope 7A7P gather the attention they deserve for I would really wish to see them live one day. I would think that their talent alone would be enough, but then again history shows that some of the best mid-western hardcore bands have often been overlooked in the past, in favor of east or west coast bands that sound exactly like their peers. All this to say, get this record NOW. One of my favorite songs: Away With Words. Amazing intro!!! You can get MP3s from their website.
