Boston Strangler - Primitive
Jorge Luis Borges said we die twice, when we die and when our stories stop being told. Boston Strangler revives the early days of greatest scene this genre has ever know. I am not a person that will get into this debate that takes places mostly within the confines of messages boards. But there isn't that many people left in hardcore today that remember what the world was before 1990.

Today Hardcore is a fallacy of history. It is written under one erroneous assumption that NYHC is Hardcore. There was a compilation called this is Boston not LA. Release in 1982. I don't know about you but if you are going to claim the crown of kings you go after the top dog, you don't go after a secondary market or tertiary. LA had a legit grip on HC. Bostonians did not believe that NY DC or Canada had anything worth going toe to toe with. The compilation its not called this is Boston fuck DC or fuck New York. This is a important thing in this debate. When you say this is Boston fuck LA. You are gunning for top spot.
Beware NO WARNING CONTENT: this review began with me listening to suffer survive, as i often do (love this album). I hear in the back of my mind,” if i wanted to hear Madball, i would listen to Madball.” I want anyone to find at what point does suffer survive sounds like Madball. I know that ill blood had hints of it but No warning evolved. The same goes with Boston HC, it evolved musically. If i hear kill for Christ and i hear we are not amused. There is a musical growth. The same goes for The Freeze, Jerry Kids, Gang Green who morphed into Mallethead also made a big progression. SSD was shut down for making the change. DYS too. Boston HC is alive because it's morph and growth. Boston HC is not stuck in hibernation. I can sit and listen to kill for Christ today and still enjoy it the way i did in the 80's. In 25 years things have changed and i have found other albums. Hardcore has grown in all directions.
I like Boston hc like no other hardcore. I love Boston HC because it grows musically.I love Boston HC because the collections of bands that make up BHC and not the other way around. The mid 80's progression gives birth to the new to scene. It because of the unfiltered raw rage of the early hc that we have a thriving scene. Even todays big hardcore name in bhc evolve and change musically. All this to say that this is the reason why boston unlike any other scene thrives. It comes from the long tradition of fuck you to musical status quo. The fact that you can't pin point a sound to boston hc unlike saying that is NYHC proves that Boston hc is not just based on sound but on experience and living. I find NYHC is a revival of the old sound, it's a celebration of the past. The same goes with the the California , it 's a regression to the old days. I don't find that to be a problem but when everyone is doing a revival sound, it makes it look especially to me that in 30 years musically no one has grown. Have heart, Bane, American nightmare,Rock Bottom, Powerwolves don't sound like Boston of the 1980's. I don't know if the same can be said about the bands jocking the NYHC sound of the 80's and 90's.This is by no way a rip on Agnostic Front, Cro Mags, Murphy law ,Madball or sick of it all. The rip is on the bands that just look back with impressionable eyes and revisionist mind. The NYHC has become ghettoized from the sound of hardcore and this is what we need to break free from. Break free of form and constraint because we build own prisons. We are our own worst enemy. We build our own ghetto. can can build a mountain or you can dig a hole. you dig out dirt and pile it up until you reach a higher place or you get stuck in a hole and you keep digging yourself in.
The Boston strangler are a revival sound. It's pure, a rendition of early Boston HC. I hear them and i hear the fu's , ssd, slapshot. It's great to hear it because its a glimpse of the past. When i hear a band i like i don't think oh where are they from. I like them and i say oh fuck yet another Boston band bring it down.
This Boston strangler is like reading an old classic with modernist touches. It's a perfect retro rendition This is unlike those filters you use to make something look old but you know it's fake. This effort is well documented and done to perfection. If this is an accident than the proof is that greatness is in the water,
